I've taken out the banner at the top of the page, Where the banner used to be there is a black bar around where it was , it looks to me like a cell of some sort in the css file. However I cannot find where this entry is. Also there is a black border around most of the site too (i've changed the background to suit my page)

Look in roster_header.tpl and roster_footer.tpl

In the header file there are div tags with class="bodyline" in them
Remove those tags (you ned to make sure you remove the cooresponding tag in the footer file) or just remove the class part

That worked.
