I tried getting this up and running for a few hours but getting many errors. I tried searching the forums too I found some posts similar but the one post their host was using a linux server so they had to change permissions on the folders and files but my hosting server is a windows server and found out from google windows servers don't support chmod 777 or 666. Here are the errors if you have suggestions would appreciate your help. I already created a mysql database as well. I did edit the conf file as it asked below and this is the screen errors. it did populate the mysql database with the required files that I can see. I'm gonna get some shut eye though so will be back later. Happy Mothersday everyone!

It seems that the roster/cache/ directory is not writable on your server
I would ask your host about permissions, since I'm not quite sure how to accomplish this on a windows server that you don't have control over

oh snap you are good zanix. Yea I rechecked my hosting control panel and sure enough their is a small box at top of heading giving me full read and write control over all files and folders. I did do this earlier but somehow missed that button thanks man.

Alright here is another problem apparently I can edit the conf file but can't edit and set the permissions and narrowed it down to the windows server it is hosted on and needs mod-rewrite enables in the .htaccess file.

Here is a quote from my hosting provider help file..

Mod_rewrite is an Apache web server module installed on all of our Linux servers by default; it does not have to be installed or enabled. Our Linux hosting accounts support most mod_rewrite functionality.

You do not need to enable mod_rewrite in your httpd.conf, as this is handled at a global level. All you need to do is add the desired code to the body of your .htaccess file.

Now I looked in the .htaccess file and it seems there is some code in there. I guess I have to figure out how to enable and what code to use to enable mod_rewrite so I can set permissions to my .php file. SO I have two choices one do some reading and hope I can find the answer easily or option 2. change my hosting plan to a linux server instead of a windows server. Any of you know what code is needed here?

Mod_rewrite is not related to this, it has to do with being able to use 'pretty urls', like 'roster/members/memberslist/a=g:1' instead of 'roster/index.php?p=members-memberslist&a=g:1'.

Your problem looks like some kind of security measure. The 'conf.php' file can be manually created if needed. The cache directory, however, needs to be writable, and files put there by roster need to be executable as PHP scripts by later calls to roster.

Thanks for the reply. I did create a conf.php file and updated it with the info roster spit out at me. So then I go to restart the installation and I get the same error. That it can't write to the conf.php file. I manually set the permissions in properties of the conf.php to allow read and write access to all users before I uploaded it to the server too. So not sure whats going on.

I can set permissions to folders(but not files) in my server control panel so I set the permissions to the cache directory folder and all the errors went away and now atleast I can get to step 3. But then like I said it is giving me the error it can't read conf.php file. Thanks for helping me out guys appreciate it.

Yea I can transfer for free from a windows server to a linux server and that is the route I'm thinking of going.

because roster is built based on php a linux server will allow you to take full advantage of Roster.

That is excellent news then I just started the transfer from a windows server to a linux server. Not sure why I went with a windows server to begin with because when I added the hosting package to my cart it was for a linux server but changed my mind. Go figure though. Thanks for the help guys.

One last post in this thread my transfer from my host went through ,I transferred from a windows server to a linux server and had absolutely no issues with installing roster on my site. Thanks again guy and I will edit main post to put [solved] in the heading.

WoWRoster can run on a Windows server.
From what I know, Ulminia runs a server like that.
As any site server OS, all depends on the settings. True is that a Linux/Apache/MySQL combination is more classic.

AnthonyB also runs Roster on a IIS server and very successfully as well
