what about .nopatch files?

I know pvplog uses a .nopatch file for what reason i haven't a clue.

It's 'feature' of the Cosmos update utility that it blows away any tool that lacks a .nopatch file within it. The assumption being that if you run Cosmos, it provides all your Addon needs.

Or at least, it did this long ago. I haven't touched it in over a year myself.

Cosmos was AWESOME back in the day, but it went downhill a few months into release

Cosmos is still using the opt-out system for automatically deleting addons. Using an opt-in system, where the cosmos mods are marked, has been suggested but so far not yet implemented.

I like a lot of the Cosmos addons, but I hate its updater, so I just periodically download a zip file of the latest alpha and unzip that into place.

Cosmos is essentially a suite, not unlike MS Office or Mozilla Seamonkey. It's a bundle of lots of addons with some common libraries. If you use most of them, then handling them as a bundle saves time when keeping them up to date.
