alt code in characters name

I am finding this does not work with alt codes or am I just being noob and doing something wrong.

IE
my ingame name is gizmö

on the server the file doesn't get saved as gizmö

so I tried the sig.php way and it still wont work.

is this due to server config or just alt codes are just that evil? and I (the admin) will have to go through and change the file name?

also, if alt code in characters name is that evil, can code be added to replace the characters with default ones? IE you have to set it to save the images to jpg (or whatever format) all alt codes chars get changed to 1 (or any character) making the file name gizm1.jpg with siggen.

Same problem here. Char name is Jägere, resolves fine in Firefox, but not in IE. What's the solution? (sorry if it's posted and I haven't seen it yet!)

The sigs are saved exactly like they are in the mysql db
