do you think that there is a chance to install a board-feature which keeps the topic as long as unread untill you really read it??
i have the problem very often that i check the roster-board for new topics but get distracted somehow. after 15min (or so) the session is exoired and every topic is marked as read.
i dont know which boardsoftware you are using but i can imagine that there is a mod for that. e.g. for phpbb there are several as i know from my own experiance.
perhaps there are more users who would appreciate such a feature
